Dear Prospective Member,

Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department. To be eligible for active membership the applicant must be at least 16 years of age. Along with your application, please provide a copy of your driver’s license, CPR card and any fire or medical certificates you may hold currently. By signing and dating this application and completing the required fingerprinting, you are consenting to a National Criminal Background Check conducted by the Virginia Department of EMS by request of Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department. The findings of the criminal background check will be reported to Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department and placed in your personnel file and is required before being voted on as a probationary member. All applications are brought before a membership committee who will conduct an interview with the applicants and then the committee will give their recommendation to the membership of Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department at a monthly business meeting held on the first Tuesday of each month.

Applicants must understand the physical demands of being an emergency services provider to the community. Physical demands such as long hours on your feet, hours in hot or cold weather, lifting, bending, climbing and crawling are just a few of the endless demands this type of service puts on its members. Applicants must also understand the mental demands and stress placed on the members of the emergency services profession. You have to be able to function in adverse situations in a quick and efficient manner. Members of the emergency services see things and have to deal with things that the people in the general public have a hard time dealing with.

Fire and EMS service providers are regulated by Virginia laws that govern emergency medical services. Training and a number of hours training each year are mandated by the state of Virginia. All emergency medical organizations in Virginia fall under the rules and regulations of the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Emergency Medical Services. Each EMS organization must also have an Operations Medical Director (OMD) which sets the protocols to which the department must adhere to.
