Dear Prospective Member,
Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department. To be eligible for active membership the applicant must be at least 16 years of age. Along with your application, please provide a copy of your driver’s license, CPR card and any fire or medical certificates you may hold currently. By signing and dating this application and completing the required fingerprinting, you are consenting to a National Criminal Background Check conducted by the Virginia Department of EMS by request of Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department. The findings of the criminal background check will be reported to Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department and placed in your personnel file and is required before being voted on as a probationary member. All applications are brought before a membership committee who will conduct an interview with the applicants and then the committee will give their recommendation to the membership of Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department at a monthly business meeting held on the first Tuesday of each month.
Applicants must understand the physical demands of being an emergency services provider to the community. Physical demands such as long hours on your feet, hours in hot or cold weather, lifting, bending, climbing and crawling are just a few of the endless demands this type of service puts on its members. Applicants must also understand the mental demands and stress placed on the members of the emergency services profession. You have to be able to function in adverse situations in a quick and efficient manner. Members of the emergency services see things and have to deal with things that the people in the general public have a hard time dealing with.
Fire and EMS service providers are regulated by Virginia laws that govern emergency medical services. Training and a number of hours training each year are mandated by the state of Virginia. All emergency medical organizations in Virginia fall under the rules and regulations of the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Emergency Medical Services. Each EMS organization must also have an Operations Medical Director (OMD) which sets the protocols to which the department must adhere to.
Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department Requirements for Membership
Minimum of 16 years of age, of mature judgment, clean and neat in appearance Be of sound physical and mental condition, capable of performing all assigned duties Must adhere to all requirements, rules and regulations put forth by Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department and the state of Virginia Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department has a zero tolerance policy on the use of illegal drugs and/or intoxicating substances by its members. ALL MEMBERS are subject to random drug testing. ALL applicants must pass a drug test prior to becoming a probationary member. Never been convicted to any felony or crime of moral turpitude Business meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month and Drill meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month. All new members must go through a 90 day probationary period, where 20 Training hours must be obtained. Then new members will be required to complete 9 more months of probation to ensure knowledge and training in the Line of Duty All members are required to notify the secretary if they are unable to attend a meeting. Work, religion, family or illness are excused absences. All members are required to have a minimum of 24 hours of training per year. All members must hold a current and valid CPR card from the American Heart Association.
Members must have a valid EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator Certificate) card to be considered as a possible driver. All members are offered Hepatitis B vaccinations at the expense of Washington County Virginia. If you choose not to take the vaccinations, a waiver form must be signed and placed in your personnel file. You may choose to take the vaccinations during your first year of membership at GRSVFD. Green Spring Volunteer Fire Department will not tolerate any form of harassment, sexual or any other.

The Green Spring Vol Fire Department is always looking for members to help us help the community. We provide both fire and medical assistance to the Green Spring community. Positions within the department vary from support staff to actual fire fighting or medical assistance. You may not think you can make a difference, but we know you can.
